Roughcasting & Rendering

Traditional roughcast (harling) and modern render to protect your walls from the Scottish weather and give your home a smart, fresh finish.

Weatherproof walls, done the Scottish way

Roughcast has protected Scottish homes for generations, and for good reason — that hard, textured coat sheds our driving rain and stands up to the freeze-thaw of winter. But when it cracks, blows or lets water behind it, damp soon follows on the inside.

We repair failing roughcast and re-coat whole elevations in traditional harling or modern render, so your walls look sharp and stay dry. And because we roof too, we can tackle the roof and walls together while the scaffold's up.

Roughcasting & rendering work

  • Traditional roughcast / harling to full elevations
  • Smooth and textured modern render finishes
  • Thin-coat coloured silicone render systems
  • Cracked, blown and hollow roughcast cut out and repaired
  • Cracks raked out and made good before re-coating
  • Full house re-coats to refresh a tired exterior

Roughcasting FAQs

What is roughcasting (harling)? +
Roughcasting, or harling, is the traditional Scottish wall finish where a wet mix of aggregate and render is cast onto the wall to give a hard-wearing, textured, weatherproof coat. It's ideal for our climate and is what you'll see on most older Scottish homes.
What's the difference between roughcast and render? +
Roughcast has a rough, pebbled texture from the aggregate thrown onto it, while modern render can be finished smooth or with a thin-coat silicone finish in a range of colours. We offer both and will advise which suits your property and the existing finish.
Can you patch-repair roughcast or does the whole wall need doing? +
Small areas of cracked or blown roughcast can often be cut out and patched, though colour and texture matching is never perfect on an old wall. Where a whole elevation is failing, re-coating the full wall gives a far better, more uniform result. We'll tell you honestly which makes sense.
Do you roughcast as well as roof? +
Yes. Alongside our roofing work we take on roughcasting and rendering, so we can weatherproof both your roof and your walls in one go — handy when scaffolding is already up for roof work.
